Liberia's Digital Future: Why It Is Not Optional

By EJ Bollie • 2026-02-14 14:23:13

I’ve spent some time reviewing Liberia’s digital presence on the Internet, and what I see is honestly discouraging. The nation urgently needs to invest in technology for many reasons. It is only through technology that Liberia will be able to build and improve government services, healthcare, education, and business opportunities. Let me highlight a few key areas where digital transformation is not just beneficial; it’s necessary.

Skills and Education:
Integrating ICT into education would finally make it possible for students in remote counties to access online lessons, digital libraries, and even exams—without scrambling to buy outdated textbooks from under the Ministry of Education. This is crucial in a country where many schools still lack trained teachers and modern learning resources.

The government should begin serious consultations with Liberian experts and stakeholders in the diaspora to develop state‑of‑the‑art Learning Management Systems (LMS) and other digital academic tools. These systems can bridge the gap between students and quality education, no matter where they live.

Healthcare and Social Services:
We can all agree that Liberia’s healthcare system continues to struggle with limited facilities, staff shortages, and poor data management. ICT integration could change that.

Technology can support telemedicine, electronic medical records, and stronger disease surveillance. These tools help doctors track and treat patients faster and improve outbreak detection. A mobile health app from the Ministry of Health could spread vital public health information in local communities, improving vaccination rates, maternal health, and emergency response.

Government and Transparency:
Many Liberian government ministries still rely on outdated, siloed systems that slow down services and create inefficiencies. A modern digital system for tax and business registration, land records, and digital payments would reduce corruption and regulate how money moves through the system.

A digitized system, backed by strong regulation, guarantees accountability, transparency, and compliance. Digital systems create audit trails. And in an economy deeply affected by corruption, this level of traceability is exactly what’s needed.

Closing the Digital Divide:
If Liberia invests in infrastructure, digital skills, and smart regulation, technology can become a powerful equalizer—connecting villages to markets, youth to opportunities, and the entire country to global possibilities. With the world advancing rapidly, investing in ICT is no longer optional. It is a national necessity.
